she left home and started drag racing when she was 17, after stuff with reese got really bad

Tessa always wanted to be a great mage... seeing the amazing feats that could be accomplished with magic, and the following adoration made her want to learn magic more than anything.
but alas, it was not to be. she waited and waited and waited and waited for the day her magic would show, and yet it never did.
she tried to make up her lack of magic with other accomplishments like Baseball trophies and Perfect grades, but it was never really enough. especially after her dear baby brother Reese's magic was manifested.
seeing him doing something she'd never be able to do no matter how hard she tried, it made her feel inferior to him.
she never wanted to feel this way, jealous over a child, and yet she couldn't help it. every time she looked at him, it felt like a stabbing reminder that she'd never do even a sliver of what he could do, just because he was born with an advantage she'd never be able to beat. she avoided him like the plague, pushing him away whenever possible. she'd run away from her home days at a time just hanging out around people who never really liked her, loitering in parking lots and visiting her dad in the cemetery, only for her to return to her oblivious mother and a little brat who wouldn't stop nagging her.
sometimes she'd go to the old local arcade she and reese would go to before... y'know. she'd always play a strange little candy go-kart game they would play together back then. she never knew why she'd always pick this game, but deep down, she knew she really just wanted to feel close to her brother again.
eventually she ran away completely, leaving everything behind. she moved to the city, and thats when she found racing! the speed, the sound of the track wizzing past her... it was the only thing that could make her feel the way she did when she saw mages cast their spells.
she became Tessa, Queen of The Road! a speed demon infamous for her road rage and winning streak, and people loved it! she finally felt loved in a way she hadn't felt since she was young.
that annoying little brother of her's would sometimes try to reconnect... but it never really went well. she was bigger than some silly bug obssesed brat! ...right?
then, one night, when she was manspreading over the couch noodles in hand, watching a video about old video games, she got a call from her agent. it was for a sports day at some arcane academy... she refused at first, then the agent offered a cash bonus... and well, she couldn't pass that up, could she?
